Interesting facts about HIV/AIDS

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the highly contagious virus that killed about 25 million people in world; and around 40 million people are affected with AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). HIV comes out from Africa and spread all over the world in 10 years. The first AIDS patient was Robert, an African American who died in 1969. However, Gaetan Dugas, a French Canadian flight attendant, who often travel across the countries and assert sexual relationship with more than 2,500 partners. He is also named as ‘patient zero’ for AIDS. Globally, there are more than 2 million children under age 15 are infected with HIV.   1. In every 9.5 minutes, one U.S. infected with HIV; which is around 50,000 in a year. There are more than 1 million AIDS patients in U.S. and so far more than 619,000 people died due to lesbian, gay, bisexual and MSM.
  2. Basically HIV is caused due to blood transfusions, using syringes and needles, unprotected sex with AIDS person in any form, either by vaginal, anal or oral. However never spread through hugging, touching, eating together and sharing cups, bathroom, swimming pool, etc.
  3. The dry blood with HIV can stay alive for a week long in normal room temperature.
  4. HIV kills the blood cells called CD4+T that vitally help fighting body diseases. People affected with HIV gets flu like symptoms after a month for a week or month long. Some viral symptoms of HIV are: severe malnutrition, chronic diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, continuous headache, fever, purples blotches/marks in skin or mouth, etc.
  5. Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) aid AIDS patient to live longer and healthier; also lessens the chances of spreading HIV to others.
  6.  Even though HIV found in saliva but never spread through eating together or sharing utensils. However only one case traced about AIDS affected due to mouth kissing. It caused due to the person infected by HIV had severe gum disease and also the partner had.
  7. The first World AIDS Day is observed on 1st of December 1988; whereas the red ribbon adopted in 1991 as international symbol of AIDS.
