Top Five Tourist Attractions of Crete, Greece

Crete is the largest and highest populated islands of Greek and firth largest islands in Mediterranean Sea. The island is full of mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes and gorges.  The main cities in this island are Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Ierapetra, Agios Nikolas and Sitia. The island with luxurious hotels, restaurants, bars, beaches, sports and recreation centers is the most prominent tourist destination of Greece. There are many seeable archaeological museums, flora and fauna found in Crete; which are the basic attractions for tourist to see. In this article I’ve explained the top five tourist attractions of Crete.

 

1. Elafonisi beach

Elafonisi or Deer Island is located closely nearby southwest corner of Crete. The island is a complete natural reserve; which is prominent for its beach areas. The small 1.5 km² area island is not a residential area; it is just for visiting by boat and enjoys the beauties of the island.

 

2. Rethymno

A city with around fifty thousand population in the islands of Crete. The main tourist attractions here are the fortress, the rimondi fountain, and old Venetian harbor. Most of the people in this city depend upon the tourism business. The city has an Archaeological museum and one historical and legendary museum. It will be a wonderful journey to Rethymno while in Crete Islands.

It is the second largest city of Crete Islands after Heraklion. Some of the famous tourist locations in Chania are the Archeological Museum, the lighthouse, orthodox cathedral, the old harbor, church of St. Rocco etc. Other than this there are many more museums available in Chania; such as Folklore museum, nautical museum, war museum, school life museum etc.

 

4. Samaria Gorge

It is also a National Park of Greece situated in Crete Islands. The best time to visit the park is during 1st May to 15th October of every year. The gorge was created between two mountains, White Mountain and Volakias Mountain; in between which a small river passes through. There are many more gorges created there; however this one is the largest 18km long distance. Traveling is very safety there; however you need to take guidance and helps from the local tour makers or guides.

 

5. Heraklion

The largest city with administrative offices of Crete Island is Heraklion. Heraklion is a famous tourist destination of Greece. There are a number of tourist locations such as Heraklion Archeological Museum, Cretaquarium, Historical Museum of Crete, the Palace of Knossos, Natural History Museum of Crete, Iraklion Archeological Museum, Museum of Cretan Ethnology, Lyrarakis winery, Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantazakis, Morosini Fountain etc. In addition, do not forget to enjoy the nightlife of Heraklion with its Doctor Fish, a premier fish spa.

Apart from these, Crete is an island with Greek Mythologies; which is prominently appearing through various monuments, museums, festivals, cultures and traditions.
