The eleventh annual World Autism Awareness Day is 2nd April 2018. This day was designated by United Nations to take measures to raise awareness people about Autism. On this day many autism organizations do awareness and fund-raising campaigns and events.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with several characters like repetitive behaviors, social intervention, verbal and nonverbal communication, sensory processing etc. It is hard to diagnose as symptoms appear at the age three and last throughout a person’s life. Such conditional patients are now called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An estimated 1 in 48 boys and 1 in 252 girls identified with ASD in the US.
The official color for National Autism Awareness is bright royal blue.
There are three types of autism spectrum disorders:
- Autistic disorder or classic disorder: People with autistic disorder usually have challenges like language delays, communication problems, unusual behaviors and interests. However, some people also found with some special characters and behaviors.
- Asperger syndrome: Such people don’t have any language or intellectual disability. However, they seem with some social challenges and unusual behaviors and interests.
- Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD) or atypical autism: People with PDD or atypical have fewer and milder symptoms than those with autistic disorder. They may have some social and communication challenges.
Causes and Risk Factors:
- As per the scientific research, many ASD cases are found due to parental or gene disorder, improper diagnosis during pregnancy, the reaction of harmful drugs, including environmental and biological factors.
- Children who have parents or siblings with ASD are at higher risk of having an ASD.
- About 10% of children with an ASD have an identifiable genetic disorder, such as fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, Down syndrome and other chromosomal disorders.
